This article is 5 years old but things have moved along in technology and understanding of food safety.

The human gut host billions if not trillions of different bacteria, as does the shrimp gut – so bound to find large mix of prevalent bacteria from host region.

Just cook well and wash hands before eating – noting that over past 20 years and since introduction of HACCP the cases of food borne illnesses and recalls for shrimp have been the lowest of any food category.

Shrimp industry does not need consolidation or to be run like the salmon industry.

It will be counter productive to consolidate. This is the message of what companies are for.

Innovation, widely dpread ownership and diverse firms that adapt fast to society’s needs is the better route.

Collective capitalism is already the existing shrimp farming model if one takes a helicopter view.

Also as a young industry, highly profitable and under continual scrutiny, shrimp aquaculture in its relatively short 40 years has not had the luxury to externalize its wastes….

Majority of shrimp farmers – especially those in South America – understand the importance of mangroves to their business.

Here, in Senegal, there are no shrimp farms and yet mangroves have been destroyed at higher rate than areas with shrimp farming.

Same for regions in US with the likes of Florida and Puerto Rico having mangrove forest cover loss up to 95% in some areas.

Shrimp farming has had a bad rap on this.

Yes as scavengers and omnivores bio-film (floc) is a favourite

Shrimp also very good at helping clean water and love algae!

So bacterial and algal meal it is then……..micro-organisms.
