Gender bias in vannamei shrimp culture.
Vannamei males expend energy for sexual maturity from 12g on – earlier than females – albeit sperm not viable until bigger/older. Hence females tend to grow bigger but male vannamei comparitively eat more feed aggressively…
Many trials done in the 1980-1990’s to get all female PLs. Heat shock treated, chemically treated, pH changes, via added hormones in feed, manipulation of artemia and even using certain natural feeds Trials done in spawning, hatching and larvae culture tanks.
However sex reversal has not been succesfully developed for commercial application – as of yet.
Another incremental technology to look forward to.
