Buyers have been value stripping for several decades now. Why? Because geographically global supply and fragmented production base has allowed it to…..and with that price lowering came growth…..

In the shrimp farming industry most do not have the B2C branding and stick with B2B and commodity production……

There are a few who do have end consumer eyeballs and with this the differentiation…

Genetics starts with a survival of the fittest stress test. Then a growth over survival selection. Then after production energy input is financially balanced to commodity market output in a close-to-market location – then survival and sustainability is required again.

Processing aids versus processing additives in shrimp.

Well processing aids – such as polyphosphate (e451) – is used in whole coldwater prawn to help break down the membrane between shell and meat – but use does not need to be declared.

Contrary to when e451 is used on shrimp meat – with a resultant water pickup and weight gain. Here this is a processing additive – and need to be declared.

Lot of talk about how US shrimp marketing could follow an avocado marketing HAB – Hass Avocado Board strategy approach.

Will be interesting what those promoting this approach will come up with.

Interestingly makes business sense for New PescaNova to remain only in core wild fishing operations and divest out of shrimp aquaculture.

Not sure here who is confirming or who is denying what…but does sound like a leak…or creative journalism?

Pescanova have the brand market covered for most all seafood in Spain anyway and looking to grow in USA again…what with new CEO appointment.

So while getting into shrimp aquaculture was a useful undertaking back in the day and was facilitated by EU funds, the nature of the global vannamei supply market being commodity driven, the marketing and distribution arms may be supporting a settled complacency in production….with no competive pressure at operational level.

Divesting locally to a dedicated operator that has to compete against others globally may be a better strategy for New Pescanova.
